The applications are now open until April 7! This fall 30 Unite! students will be heading by train from Darmstadt to Graz, focusing on entrepreneurship, sustainability, and multicultural collaboration. This year, the train trip will be organised by TU Graz and TU Darmstadt, taking participants from Darmstadt in central Germany to Graz in southern Austria.

Under the topic “Entrepreneurship with a focus on sustainability and multicultural collaboration”, the program will cover:

Unite! Visiting Professorship Programme 2025

TU Darmstadt invites experienced postdocs, lecturers, and professors from Unite! partner universities to apply for 13 funded visiting professorships starting Winter Semester 2025/26

In 2025, the Unite! Visiting Professorship Programme continues to aim at attracting outstanding international talents to promote interdisciplinarity in teaching and didactic innovation through international experience. It is open to all subjects represented at TU Darmstadt. Up to 13 visiting professorships could be financially supported. The target group are primarily experienced postdocs. The deadline for applications is March 31st, 2025.

This format of strategic cooperation between Unite! universities promotes networking among its academic communities and supports the career development of the visiting scientists. Moreover, students benefit from internationally oriented teaching. The target group are primarily experienced postdocs affiliated to Unite! partner universities, although advanced career phase (lecturers, professors) are also welcome to apply.  

Visiting professors from the Unite! partner universities offer supplementary (elective) courses at TU Darmstadt, ideally bringing innovative topics. Starting in the winter semester 2025/26, the appointment period should cover the lecture period from mid-October to mid-February and can be established for a maximum of two years.

Financing

TU Darmstadt will cover all the costs, with a co-financing structure planned for the WS 2025/26 (half of the costs covered centrally, and the other half from the host institutes). Possible prolongations of the guest professorships should be financed by the host departments themselves. The use of state funds (Landesmittel) is obligatory.

Expression of interest

Interested candidates should explore the faculties and departments of TU Darmstadt here. Once you identify the department that aligns with your area of interest, candidates are encouraged to directly contact the head of the department, briefly introducing yourself and providing a proposal for the course you would like to teach at TU Darmstadt.
You may contact Dr.-Ing. Nebojša Čamprag at nebojsa.camprag@tu-darmstadt.de. He will assist you in identifying a suitable department and facilitating contact with the department head for further discussions.
The following documents should be attached as a single PDF:

  • A brief motivation letter (half a page)
  • A short description of a course you intend to teach at TUDa (half a page)
  • An academic curriculum vitae
  • A doctoral certificate (and postdoctoral qualifications, if applicable, for teaching at the professorial level).The application must include the following:
    • The candidate’s application materials (as listed above)
    • A proposal for the candidate in the form of a recommendation letter (max. 1–1.5 pages)
    • A written statement outlining the added value of the candidate’s teaching at TU Darmstadt and for Unite!

CoDaS Master’s Programme in Communications and Data Science (Erasmus Mundus) – Application period open!

The application period for studies starting in autumn 2025 is currently ongoing from 4 Dec 2024 to 10 Jan 2025. CoDaS, one of the first joint degree programmes offered by the Unite! alliance, has been granted the prestigious Erasmus Mundus funding by Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union in 2023. Erasmus Mundus funding enables students from all over the world to join the programme with a generous scholarship scheme throughout the studies.

Master’s Programme in Communications Engineering and Data Science (CoDaS) is an international joint master’s degree programme offered by five European universities: Aalto University, (Finland); Grenoble INP Graduate schools of Engineering and Management (France); Technical University of Lisbon(Portugal);  Technische Universität Braunschweig (Germany)   and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain).

In this two-year master’s programme, students will study in two of the partner universities in two countries, one year at both. Students may choose between 4 Home Universities (first year; Aalto, Técnico Lisboa, TU Braunschweig, or UPC Barcelona Tech) and 5 Host Universities (second year; Aalto, Técnico Lisboa, TU Braunschweig, UPC BarcelonaTech, or Grenoble INP-UGA). 

First-year studies are common to all partner universities and on the second year, students get to focus on their specialization field based on their second-year university. After completing the programme, students will receive a double degree, meaning that they will graduate from both universities they have studied in. 


Objectives of studies 

The expertise gained through the Communications and Data Science Programme features diverse programming skills, good mathematical background, goal-oriented problem solving, as well as efficient project planning and management.  

Students will acquire competences in a range of techniques covering broad areas of electronics, data science, distributed systems, modelling and analysis of signals and systems, machine learning models, and communication systems. The programme will empower students to solve industry-relevant problems employing cutting-edge tools of artificial intelligence, automation and control theory, data analytics, wireless systems, and signal processing. 

Students will also collaborate with fellow students from the other universities. Great examples are hybrid courses and project courses where students from different universities do a project together. 

 

Data science has so many possible applications, which I find kind of amazing! It’s beneficial to combine data science with communications engineering because it gives a better understanding of lower-level tools and processes. It completes my understanding of the data and where it’s coming from. It’s kind of two different parts of the same information flow

How to apply 

The application period for studies starting in autumn 2025 runs from 4 December 2024 to 10 January 2025.

Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree from a relevant field are welcomed to apply.

On the application form, the applicants are asked to list the partner universities where they would like to study on the first year and the second year.
Admitted students will be allocated to the partner universities equally while considering students’ preferences.

Plastic-free oceans: Ocean sustainability in the sights of ULISSES

ULisboa is holding the 5th edition of the project and applications are open from 15 November to 15 January Under the motto ‘Ocean without Plastics’, the initiative aims to creatively develop innovative technological solutions to characterise and mitigate the pollution of the oceans by plastics, guaranteeing biodiversity and the sustainable reuse of these materials in applications with economic value.

University of Lisbon Interdisciplinary Studies on Sustainable Environment and Seas aims to raise awareness among students and society, favouring a deeper understanding of issues related to the oceans. 

The initiative is aimed at university students who are looking to take part in an interdisciplinary and international project, who want to deepen their knowledge of the ocean and its importance for the sustainability of the planet, and who are looking to explore different career prospects. It will take place over several weeks, with an online component between January and April 2025, and a face-to-face component in Lisbon from 7 to 25 July 2025. 

The selected students will take part in an international team and, supported by researchers and experts, will be challenged to design the most innovative solution to the problems facing the oceans in a collaborative environment. 

The winning team in the last edition designed a scientific project that precisely addressed the three main objectives of the challenge. Firstly, they identified the technological resources and communication strategies essential for mapping the area affected by the incident described in the challenge. Next, they analysed the biodiversity of the impacted region, presenting a list of species at high risk and developing a detailed monitoring plan to assess the impacts over time. Finally, they proposed two innovative solutions to reduce plastic pollution in the oceans. 

Ulisses is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) funded under Erasmus+ KA131. It consists of an intensive learning programme, offered by three partner institutions, combining virtual learning activities with physical mobility activities. ULisboa will be the receiving institution, where the learning activities during the physical mobility will occur. Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya  and Technische Universität Darmstadt are partner institutions, collaborating in the teaching and sending students in mobility. Notwithstanding, students from other institutions are welcome to apply.

Versatile Engineers of the future. Project management and leadership soft skills in a technical setting.

Nowadays, engineers go beyond mere technical expertise; their proficiency extends to project management and leadership.

Recognizing the shift, students from the 4S Trainers Group at Wroclaw Tech have come up with a pioneering initiative that offers a comprehensive training program for students from Unite!. “Versatile Engineers of the Future” – this new project secures funding from Unite! Seed Fund for Student Activity, involves 3 partner universities: Wroclaw Tech, Politecnico di Torino and Universidade de Lisboa.

The project objective is to provide a comprehensive training program for students from Unite! alliance universities: Wroclaw Tech, PoliTO and ULisboa. The program value lies in its capacity to educate students across technical, social, business, and project management dimensions. Coordinator Bartosz Stec aims to focus the project around developing project management and leadership soft skills, intending to apply them in the technical, low-consumption vehicles environment. Technical and soft skills’ knowledge will intersect in a unified program involving the student groups from three partner universities.

Boost Your Skills in a Technical Setting.

How will students achieve these valuable skills? The Versatile Engineers of the Future project is anchored in 5-day training camps held in each participating country. Beginning with the selection of a group of 24 students, online meetings and training sessions are essential for gathering preliminary information about participants and keeping the people involved and updated about the state of the project. The result and knowledge gained during the camps will be validated through appropriate interviews and questionnaires.

The inaugural camp will take place in Lisbon in September 2024, offering participants a tailored experience designed for engineers eager to explore management and entrepreneurship. This training will consist of lectures and workshops. The second camp, scheduled for November in Turin, will focus on the technical part of the training program.
The final camp, set for March 2025 in Wrocław, will serve as a culmination of the training, testing participants’ acquired knowledge and leadership abilities in tackling complex project challenges. Activities during this phase will predominantly focus on soft skills training, fostering open discussions, and culminating in a group case study.

The project involves three university students organizations. Each of them will be responsible for a different topic of the training program. Trainers from 4S, the Student Union Training Section from Wroclaw Tech, will conduct the soft skills training. Members of Team H2politO from PoliTO, with the help of Teaching staff will be responsible for the technical part of workshops, lectures, hands-on activities and visits to laboratories. Members of the AEIST, the official Student Union of Instituto Superior Técnico, from ULisboa, will be responsible for transferring knowledge about exchange of practical insights and real-world strategies, providing a comprehensive view of business within engineering disciplines.

Training in the Field of Open Science and Research Data Management

The network Unite! and Aalto University invite you to the third cycle of training sessions on open science and research data management. Scientists, students, and staff are welcome to participate.

One of the goals of the Unite! network is to enhance competencies in the field of open science at partner universities and more broadly in society.

Aalto University’s Data Agents are a group of research-oriented university staff who support researchers and students in matters related to research data management. In the last academic year, approximately 2000 people registered for their training cycles.

The spring series includes topics such as:

  • Artificial intelligence and research work,
  • OER policy for higher education,
  • Exploring AI analysis of qualitative data,
  • Privacy in speech technology research,
  • Archiving data collected from people.

Taming Mathematics within the Unite! Network.

Scientists from Graz University of Technology, University of Lisbon, and Wrocław University of Science and Technology will investigate the level of math anxiety among students in technical fields at universities affiliated with the Unite! network. This is the beginning of efforts aimed at leveling the playing field for math education in Europe.

The project is led by the university in Graz, which, together with partners from Portugal and our university, intends to first examine the level of math anxiety and in the future develop the foundations of an open educational environment supporting both students and lecturers.

From Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Dr. Elżbieta Zienkiewicz, Associate Professor from the Faculty of Chemistry, and Dr. Adam Marczak from the Faculty of Mathematics are involved in the project. “We are both experienced educators heavily involved in teaching in the first year of engineering studies,” explains Prof. Zienkiewicz. “When our Austrian partners, with whom we have collaborated before, invited us to this project, we decided to support them with our knowledge, especially since our teaching experiences are very similar.”

Mathematics forms the basis of almost all engineering studies. However, especially for those starting their studies, the jump between the level required in high school and at the university is enormous. Another issue is the lecturers themselves, whose requirements and teaching methods are often not entirely understandable to students.

“Hence the idea to take care of young people starting their education at university, providing them with a safe environment to bridge the gaps between their existing knowledge and the new requirements,” says Dr. Adam Marczak from the Faculty of Mathematics.

The project, funded by the Unite! Seed Fund, aims to create an environment where individuals interested in this method of teaching mathematics can collaborate. “Initially, our goal is to diagnose the current state of affairs. In the next step, we will examine the correlation between math anxiety and the student’s actual skill level,” explains the researcher from W13. “Then we need to address real changes in the context of the approach to teaching mathematics.”

The outcome will be an open platform where lecturers can share best teaching practices, discuss emerging challenges, and exchange or co-create open educational resources.

“These are long-term plans, and for now, we have a survey ahead of us, to which we will soon invite all students, especially those in their first year. We hope for a significant response,” says Dr. Adam Marczak.
