Better PhDs, Stronger Mentors: Unite!Widening Workshops in Wroclaw

In October Wrocław Tech will host 3-day trainings dedicated to early-stage researchers and supervisors. Both trainings will be a great opportunity for exchanging experiences and knowledge with representatives of the Unite! universities.

Onboarding Early-Stage Researchers – training for PhD students

Hosted at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, this 3-day in-person training supports early-stage researchers in taking their first structured steps into the PhD journey, in continuity with the Unite!Widening capacity-building actions launched in Autrans (Grenoble). Working in a small, international group, participants explore one guiding question: how to navigate your research career?

A core component of the training is the onboarding of new PhD candidates:

  • Participants explore how to co-create individual development plans, set clear expectations, and establish productive communication patterns from day one.
  • Dedicated sessions focus on giving constructive feedback on drafts, presentations, and project progress, with specific attention to balancing structure and autonomy so that researchers can grow into independent thinkers.
  • In parallel, the training addresses how to support career development by identifying transferable skills, discussing diverse career paths both in and beyond academia, and encouraging strategic networking.

Through interactive workshops, self-reflection exercises and peer feedback, participants refine their research question, map potential supervisors and collaborators, and sketch realistic milestones for the first years of their doctorate. The “lunch-to-lunch” format combines short inputs, hands-on exercises, a study visit in the Wrocław research and innovation ecosystem, and informal networking moments.

The training is aimed at young researchers, preferably PhD candidates, with reserved places for ULisboa and Wrocław Tech (6 each), 1–2 participants from each other Unite! university, and 4 from other Widening institutions. Participation is free of charge.

The training will take place on 21–23 October 2026 in Wrocław.

Registration is open until 13 September. The priority in the recruitment process is given to the PhD students participating in the Unite.Widening Programme.

Training Supervisors for PhD Collaborations – training for supervisors

This 3-day in-person training is dedicated to supervisors who guide PhD students and early-stage researchers, further developing the supervisory dimension highlighted in earlier Unite!Widening initiatives such as the “Building Research Communities” training in Autrans. The programme focuses on how to effectively onboard new PhD candidates, co-create individual development plans, and build productive, trust-based supervisory relationships across institutions and national systems.

  • The programme gathers supervisors from Unite! universities and other Widening institutions to exchange practices and reflect on their role in fostering high-quality doctoral research.
  • Through case discussions and peer learning, participants address typical supervisory challenges, including aligning expectations, dealing with delays, and co-supervision across institutions and countries.
  • Participants work through real supervisory cases, sharing approaches to constructive feedback, researcher well-being, and diverse career paths. Sessions also address psychologically safe research environments and international collaboration.
  • The “lunch-to-lunch” 3-day format combines expert inputs, interactive workshops, a study visit and networking.

The training is open to supervisors at any level, with 6 places for ULisboa, 6 for Wrocław Tech, 1–2 per other Unite! university, and 4 for other Widening institutions. Participation is free of charge.

The training will take place on 21–23 October 2026 in Wrocław.

Unite! Widening Living Lab Community Kick-off (online)

This kick-off meeting marks the launch of the Unite! thematic community on Living Labs: a network of researchers and administrators across Unite! partner universities working with real-world research environments. The online meeting will take place on 30 June.

This first meeting will bring together Living Labs representatives from across the Unite! alliance to share their work, explore common challenges around data sharing, and lay the foundations for future collaboration, such as joint participation in European projects.
Whether you are already part of a Living Lab or interested in connecting your research to one, you are welcome to join.

Unite! Virtual Matchmaking – Horizon Europe Calls: Health, Urban, Materials, Digital

As part of the Unite.WIDENING project, the Unite! alliance is organising a matchmaking with the aim of forging new consortia for highly promising Horizon Europe applications.  The event is addressed to researchers of the Unite! university alliance, as well as the non-academic partners of the project.

4 focus areas will be covered:

  • Health & Biotech
  • Urban & Resources Sustainability
  • Circular Economy & Materials
  • Digital & Autonomous Technologies

The matchmaking will take place in two steps:

1) Virtual pre-matchmaking on 19 March 2026, at 13:00-15:30 CET

The aim of the meeting is to establish a first contact between potential project coordinators and partners.

The scope of the meeting is deliberately broad, allowing for up to 48 Horizon Europe topics to be discussed. It is expected, however, that only a fraction of these topics will proceed to the next round: Only the most promising consortia — including a committed coordinator and several partners — will be invited to the later in-person meeting.

2) In-person matchmaking event in Oropa, Italy, on 12-13 May 2026 (details to be confirmed; please save the date!)

The aim of the meeting is to allow promising consortia to begin in-depth discussions on their joint proposal and to set a clear roadmap for the time until the application deadline.

Let’s Unite! – the second edition returns on 3 March

Research internships, joint research projects, online seminars, and additional scholarships – these are just some of the opportunities offered by the Unite! alliance that students, doctoral candidates, and staff of Wrocław University of Science and Technology can benefit from. We will present the details on 3 March at the Student Culture Zone, during the second edition of the Let’s Unite! fair. Special guests of the event will be students from partner universities within the Alliance.

The Let’s Unite! fair is an opportunity to explore, in one place, the offer of educational programmes, research projects, student initiatives, and mobility opportunities available through the cooperation of nine European technical universities forming the Unite! alliance.

What will set the second edition of the event apart is the participation of students from Unite! partner universities, who will come to Wrocław to share their experiences. They will talk about what studying at their home universities is like, how education systems differ, and what academic life and everyday student life look like in other European countries. This is a unique opportunity to view international mobility from a different perspective than usual.

During the fair, participants will be able to talk to Unite! representatives at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, ask questions about mobility opportunities, joint courses, projects, and scholarships, and learn how to get involved in the Alliance’s activities in practice.

The second edition of Let’s Unite! is aimed at everyone considering studying, conducting research, or cooperating in an international environment — and who would like to find out where best to start.

Leaders of Change Needed. Unite! launches a new sustainability course

Sustainability today is more than a catchy slogan – it is about concrete decisions, processes and competencies that universities need here and now. In the second half of February, the nine-module online course “Unite! Training Programme on Sustainability for Prospective Leaders” will be launched on the Metacampus platform. The programme shows how to translate climate goals into real action and effective leadership. It was developed through the collaboration of experts from Wrocław Tech, Politecnico di Torino, UPC and TU Graz, and is addressed to students and staff members who want to actively shape the transformation of their institutions.

– Transition towards sustainability at universities is a challenging process. It requires competences to make conscious decisions, the courage to change, and people who can connect strategy with everyday practice. This course was created precisely to support future leaders in implementing real change – explains prof. Magdalena Bamborska-Narożny, leader of Community 8, which developed the programme.

The course takes the form of a coherent, nine-module learning pathway and guides participants through the key areas of sustainability in higher education – from basic concepts and the role of universities in achieving global sustainability goals, through strategy and governance, to very practical issues related to energy, campus infrastructure, environmental data reporting and communicating results to decision-makers.

A strong emphasis is placed on practice. Participants will work with real-life examples from Unite! alliance universities, learning how to use tools for monitoring and analysing environmental data, exploring eco-design solutions, and analysing green business models and ways of engaging the academic community in change processes. The programme also covers topics related to sustainable mobility, the organisation of academic events and reducing the carbon footprint of business travel.

An important element of the course is its forward-looking perspective. A module dedicated to lifelong learning highlights how to develop green skills in the long term and the role micro-credentials can play in this process. In turn, classes on sustainable energy management help participants better understand decision-making processes related to energy projects, even for those without a specialised technical background.

“Unite! Training Programme on Sustainability for Prospective Leaders” is a proposal for those who want to consciously and responsibly co-create the future of higher education. The course will start on 16 February and will be delivered entirely online.

The programme is delivered fully online and has a modular structure, allowing participants to flexibly combine learning with their daily professional responsibilities. To complete the “Unite! Training Programme on Sustainability for Prospective Leaders”, participants must complete at least five course modules, covering both strategic issues and practical tools supporting the implementation of sustainability at universities.

Unite! Seed Fund – from an idea to an international project. Workshops for the Wrocław Tech community

A good idea is only the beginning. How can it be turned into an international project with real funding and partners from leading European universities?

We will look for answers to these questions at the workshop “Unite! Seed Fund – from an Idea to an International Project”, taking place on 23 January at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The event is open to students, academic teachers, and researchers who plan to apply for a grant in the upcoming call. The application period opens on 20 January and runs until 20 March.

Unite! Seed Fund is one of the most accessible support instruments within the European University Alliance Unite!. Minimal formal requirements, a fast decision-making process, and a strong focus on innovation are its key features. During the meeting at WUST, participants will learn how to use this potential in practice—from the first idea, through team building, to drafting a proposal ready for further consultation.

The event will be opened by Prof. Renata Krzyżyńska, Vice-Rector for External Relations. The first part of the meeting will provide an introduction to the Seed Fund programme—its objectives, scope of support, and examples of projects already implemented within Unite!. This will be followed by a short Q&A session and networking over coffee.

The main part of the event will consist of parallel workshops tailored to three target groups. Students will focus on developing innovative, interdisciplinary initiatives—from technological projects and hackathons to social actions. Researchers will learn how to use the Seed Fund as a rapid proof of concept ahead of applying for a larger grant. Academic teachers will take part in the track “Educational Innovations with Unite! – from Idea to Implementation”, designed for those considering new courses, modules, COIL projects, micro-credentials, or summer schools delivered in international cooperation.

Industry-Embedded Doctoral School: second call for applications at Wrocław Tech

Wrocław University of Science and Technology announces the second call for applications for the Industry-Embedded Doctoral School, one of the crucial initiatives within the framework of the project.

 The Industry-Embedded Doctoral School is a flagship component of the Unite.WIDENING project. It is designed to directly support doctoral students from Widening countries—specifically Poland and Portugal—who are conducting research in strategic areas relevant to both countries. This research must be carried out in collaboration with industry and under the academic supervision of a second supervisor affiliated with a Unite! alliance university located in a non-Widening country.

The first call for applications took place in 2025. Doctoral candidates qualified for the support, were selected through a competitive application process, conducted separately by Wrocław University of Science and Technology and Universidade de Lisboa. As a result, 2 candidates at Wrocław Tech were accepted.

As some places remain unfilled, Wrocław Tech is launching the second call for applications for the increased scholarship. The number of places is limited to 5.

The initiative is addressed to the doctoral students from Wrocław Tech on the first year of education. The other criteria include:

Mandatory requirements:

  • The doctoral dissertation topic must align with at least one of the following strategic areas defined for the project:

-Health & Biotech

-Urban and Resources Sustainability

-Circular Economy & Materials

-Digital & Autonomous Technologies

  • The candidate must have a second supervisor from a Unite! alliance university based in a non-Widening country.
  • The candidate’s research must include an active collaboration with industry.

 Detailed evaluation criteria:

  • Relevance of the dissertation topic to the given strategic area
  • Novelty of the dissertation concept
  • Scientific cooperation with a Unite! alliance university
  • Exposure of the research project to industry challenges
  • Scientific achievements and motivation of the candidate

To apply, a candidate must submit the application including a description of their research, proving its connection with industry and presenting their motivation to join the project. The deadline for submitting the application is 16 February 2026.

Each application will be assessed by an appointed selection committee The final assessment will be calculated as a weighted sum based on the significance of each criterion.

We would like to invite staff and faculty from all Unite! partner universities to participate as trainers, lecturers, and mentors to design the Widening Training Series for Researchers. Join us in shaping a practical, hands-on programme that not only enhances their skills but also builds concrete collaborations and long-term cooperation within the alliance.

Submit your ideas for training sessions (or only their parts) on selected topics, or help us identify practitioners and experts who are passionate about these themes and are ready to share their expertise and knowledge.

About the Widening Training Series

The Widening Training Series for Researchers is a joint programme of Unite!Widening. Its
goals are to:

  1. equip researchers (from early- to late-career) with advanced, practical knowledge on
    topics such as supervision, careers, research management, and collaboration;
  2. leverage the knowledge and experience of non-Widening universities;
  3. support researchers in Widening institutions (ULisboa and Wroclaw Tech in
    particular) through targeted trainings.

The target audience is researchers at all career stages from ULisboa and WrocławTech, as

For these trainings, we are especially interested in:

  • Workshops with exercises and tools (templates, canvases, checklists)
  • Case-based sessions using real examples from your institution
  • Clinics where participants work on their own situations (e.g., supervision challenges,
    mobility cases, collaboration ideas)
  • Peer exchange formats (roundtables, good practice exchanges, role-playing)
    Each proposed session should be 3–6 hours (half or full day). Sessions can be co-designed
    and co-taught by trainers from different universities.

Who can propose a session?

  • Staff, faculty, and researchers from all Unite! partner universities.
  • We particularly welcome proposals involving at least one trainer from a non-Widening
    partner (TU Graz, TU Darmstadt, KTH, UPC, PoliTO, etc.).

Unite! Seed Fund 2026: Call opens on 20 January 2026

Get an early overview of the Unite! Seed Fund Call “Spring 2026”, which includes three funding lines: Student Activities, Teaching and Learning, and Research and PhD.

A new Unite! Seed Fund funding call will open on 20 January 2026. The call provides financial support for collaborations between Unite! partner universities, helping to initiate projects and place new or emerging collaborations on a strong and sustainable footing, with applications due by 20 March 2026.

Student activities

  • Objective: Start long-term collaborations between student associations and other student-centred organisations across the Unite! universities.
  • Available budget: Up to €20,000 per project, involving at least 2 Unite! universities.
  • How to find partners? Virtual matchmaking in early February 2026 (details will be included in the call document).
  • What is new? Only student associations and other student-centred organisations at the Unite! universities will be eligible to apply. Applications from individual students will not be accepted.
  • Deadline: The deadline for contacting the Unite! Student Liaison Officer at each participating university is 5 March 2026.

The deadline for submitting the full application is 20 March 2026.

Teaching & Learning

  • Objective: Support the creation of joint/collaborative educational offers with ECTS, with the potential for being scaled up into Joint Programmes. Applications must involve at least 3 Unite! universities and address at least one of the Unite! focus areas: Sustainable Energy; Artificial Intelligence; Industry 4.0; Entrepreneurship; Engineering Biology (and Biotechnology); Space; Cybersecurity; and Sustainable Cities & Water.
  • Available budget: Between €10,000 and €80,000 per project, depending on the project goals and the number of Unite! partners involved.
  • How to find partners? Virtual matchmaking in early February 2026 (details will be included in the call document).
  • What is new? Applications aiming at the creation of joint teaching offers must include letters of commitment from all departments/schools involved, confirming that the project outcomes are to be devised as long-term educational offers fully integrated in local curricula.
  • Deadline: The deadline for submitting the full application is 20 March 2026.

Research & PhD

  • Objective: Start new research collaborations and/or PhD offers between at least 3 Unite! universities and support joint applications for larger third-party funding. Applications must address at least one of the Unite! focus areas: Sustainable Energy; Artificial Intelligence; Industry 4.0; Entrepreneurship; Engineering Biology (and Biotechnology); Space; Cybersecurity; and Sustainable Cities & Water.
  • Available budget: Between €10,000 and €80,000 per project, depending on the project goals and the number of Unite! partners involved.

  • What is new? For the programme option “Exploring” (with a budget of €10,000 per project), applications from Early Career Researchers will be preferred.

Grenoble launches call for international guest professorships and visiting scientists

The Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has officially opened its internal call IRGA – Initiatives de Recherche Grenoble Alpes, which includes a dedicated scheme for hosting international researchers for short stays.

Following the success of the Unite! Research School in Autrans, several participants expressed interest in returning to Grenoble as visiting professors or visiting scientists. The Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) has now launched its internal IRGA call – Initiatives de Recherche Grenoble Alpes – offering a dedicated programme for hosting international researchers on short-term visits.

Who can apply?

Although the programme is designed for international academics, applications must be submitted internally by a permanent UGA staff member (a researcher, teacher-researcher, or research engineer with a PhD) affiliated with a UGA research unit.

The “Accueil de scientifiques invités internationaux” scheme specifically targets academics currently employed at an institution outside France. Interested candidates should first contact their potential host in Grenoble — for example, colleagues met during the Research School — as the UGA host must act as the project leader.

What funding is available?

The programme supports 1–2-month stays, in one or two periods of at least one month each. Visits may combine research with teaching or training activities where relevant.

Eligible costs include:

  • Living and local expenses (daily allowance, accommodation, and local transport), according to UGA rules.
  • Travel costs covered by a fixed lump sum of €500 or €1,000, depending on the country of origin.

When to apply?

Proposals can be submitted at any time via the UGA DEPOSIBUS platform. Evaluation and funding decisions are made in several selection rounds, with the next deadlines:

  • 15 February 2026
