Open science trainings for spring 2025

Aalto University organises a free webinar training series on research data management and open science and invites researchers, students and service staff from Unite! to participate.

Webinars are organised by Aalto University Data Agents, a group of research-oriented Aalto employees who support researchers and students in questions related to research data management. The series includes topics such as Generative AI and copyright, Prompt engineering for research and Artificial Intelligence and responsible research. Unite! aims to be a European driver of open science and innovation. Our objective is to enhance open science competencies in the partner universities and wider in the society.

In our Unite! Horizon2020 project we have been exploring the best practices and current gaps in the open science initiatives of the Unite! member universities. Learning from each other is the essence of open science. Come meet Aalto’s researcher experts and join the discussion!

Exploring Open Educational Resources: Unite! course offerings 

Unlock the world of Open Educational Resources (OER) with Unite!’s latest course offerings! Dive into the realm of OER, where educational materials are openly accessible, editable, and shareable. Discover how to utilize OER ethically and effectively, and earn badges and credits for your accomplishments! 

 

OER are not only an important educational policy issue for international associations such as UNESCO, OER are also part of the call for “Open Science”. The background to these OER-Course offerings is the successful joint Unite! Seed fund project “Unite! OER courses” of all nine partner universities. Familiarise yourself with the background and potential of Open Educational Resources (OER), and understand how to use materials with open licences in a copyright-compliant manner.

The Lecture for all Unite! members: OER-Course at Metacampus 

Contents of the MOOC will be explored in depth in the course “Open Educational Resources” by TU Graz. This English lecture is open to all Unite! members via the Unite! Metacampus.  

This course expands on the MOOC content and offers more insights and practical training on finding, publishing, and understanding OER.

  • Locate and utilize openly licensed educational resources.
  • Create, revise, and remix OER.
  • Publish and share OER effectively.

Unite! Seed Fund 2025. Call for Applications

The deadline for all submissions is March 20, 2025, with various matchmaking events scheduled to help participants find partners for their projects

The Unite! Alliance is pleased to announce the opening of the call for the Unite! Seed Fund 2025, a fund designed to support innovative and collaborative projects among the alliance’s member universities. This fund offers financial support to students, researchers, and professors who wish to initiate joint initiatives between at least three Unite! universities (and at least two for student proposals), encouraging collaboration and excellence in education, research, and innovation.

Research&PhD and Teaching&Learning proposals must address on the Unite! Focus Areas: Sustainable Energy; Artificial Intelligence; Industry 4.0; Entrepreneurship; Engineering Biology (and Biotechnology); Space; Cybersecurity; and Sustainable Cities & Water.

Proposals will be evaluated based on their overall quality, sustainability and long-term perspectives, and potential impact.

 

The 2025 Seed Fund call includes three categories:

Student Activities Call

Deadline: The deadline for contacting Unite! Student Liaison Officer in each university is 6 March 2025.
The deadline for presenting the proposals is March 20, 2025.

Available budget: Up to €20,000 per project, with a total of €100,000 available to fund proposals involving at least two Unite! universities.

Objective: Funding for collaborative projects that bring value to the student community, such as exhibitions, events, competitions, hackathons, or extracurricular activities in any format (in-person, hybrid, or digital).

Virtual matchmaking event: February 11, 2025, 14:00 – 16:00 CET.

 

Teaching and Learning Call

Deadline: March 20, 2025

Available budget: Up to €80,000 per project, depending on the number of participating universities, with a total of €230,000.

Objective: To promote the creation of joint teaching programs, especially at the master’s level, focused on Unite!’s focus areas areas.

Virtual matchmaking event: February 12, 2025, 14:00 – 16:00 CET.

 

Research and PhD Call

Deadline: March 20, 2025

Available budget: Up to €80,000, depending on the number of participating universities, with a total of €350,000.

Objective: To foster collaborative research in strategic areas such as Energy, Biotechnology, Cybersecurity, and more, with projects involving at least three Unite! universities.

Virtual matchmaking event: February 14, 2025, 13:00 – 15:00 CET.

Learning languages outside the classroom Unite! Seed Fund Initiative: Unite! Online Language Café

The UOLC is an extracurricular peer-to-peer activity to use, practice and deepen language knowledge in a safe environment.The room will be regularly open for two hours every second Wednesday 16:30-18:30 CET.

Unite!’s multilingual and multicultural environment provides an excellent setting for informal language learning which, based on language learning theories, can occur unconsciously and incidentally outside the classroom setting through interaction with native speakers or exposure to authentic language. The Unite! Online Language Café (UOLC) is designed to do just that – easily accessible and voluntary. It fosters informal interactions to promote and encourage students to use and learn all Unite! languages. A virtual space, where meetings are planned, the UOLC will be run by students for students starting on 15 th January 2025. Detailed information and access will be given on the Metacampus space.

The UOLC is an extracurricular peer-to-peer activity to use, practice and deepen language knowledge in a safe environment. Students from diverse academic backgrounds gather and decide in which language(s) they want to communicate and exchange ideas and intercultural experiences. The room will be regularly open for two hours every second Wednesday 16:30-18:30 CET.

In the UOLC as proposed here, students meet on a platform for an authentic intercultural communication which is facilitated by student tutors. The trained student tutors’ role will be to explain the idea of the Language Café, introduce topics, encourage communication and clear misunderstandings. To reach the objectives the UOLC will create a model, the didactic concepts, training material for student tutors (speaking all nine local Unite! languages Catalan, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Spanish and additionally English), an evaluation process and select an appropriate platform. Once finalized, the virtual UOLC will be a sustainable project which raises awareness of linguistic diversity and encourages autonomous learning. The model will easily be adapted to other contexts and target groups.

And that’s what’s in it for the students

• The Unite! Online Language Café is an informal learning environment that provides a non- binding activity to use languages in a peer-to-peer setting and to raise awareness of the opportunities provided by Unite!.

• Students are engaged in using languages in a safe environment without grades and testing.

• Students are supported in developing autonomy in language learning as they are not following exercises and instruction from teachers, but engage in meaningful and real-life encounters in (a) different language(s).

• The UOLC creates the chance of developing intercultural competences as people with different backgrounds interact and discuss various topics.

• Students get involved with peers from other Unite! partners. These encounters can lower the threshold to engage in virtual or physical mobility within Unite! and promote exchanges n a trans-European campus.

Unite Students Call for Participation: Share Your Tech Project with a Social Impact!

Are you ready to showcase your tech project and make a real difference? Unite! is calling on its students to present innovative, socially-committed projects at the XI Unite! Dialogue in Barcelona (28th February). This is your chance to inspire future scientists and engineers across Europe by mentoring secondary school students and contributing to meaningful societal change.

Unite! promotes social responsibility at the heart of academic life and encourages initiatives that drive sustainability, inclusion, and innovation. We’re looking for tech-driven projects that reflect these values and have the potential to engage secondary school students, sparking collaboration and future projects in schools across the Unite! Alliance.

What projects are we looking for? Unite! will select scientific and technological projects that could lead to active engagement with society and that have the potential to inspire new collaborative projects in schools within the Unite Alliance! The selected projects will be presented in a hybrid session to secondary school teachers, who will attend the XI Unite! Dialogue in Barcelona. They will afterward have the opportunity to meet and collaborate on these projects to develop them with pre-university students at their high school.

The selected projects will be presented in person at the next Unite! Dialogue in Barcelona, 25-28th February 2025, during a morning session on Friday 28th.

A maximum of 3 students per project will be able to travel to Barcelona and take part in this initiative to present their projects and act as mentors for secondary school students. Additionally, all participants will be recognized for their participation with a Unite! Open Badge.

Moreover, all the projects that are proposed and meet the criteria will have the opportunity to be displayed on the eTwinning and Unite! websites. eTwinning is an online platform that connects schools across Europe, enabling them to collaborate on educational projects in a secure digital environment, and it will serve as a resource to inspire new initiatives for pre-university students based on the projects presented during the Dialogue.

Requirements for submitting a project:

  • Scientific-technological project: The subject of the project must be scientific-technological. We are looking for a specific project already developed or in progress at the date of the call, so that the specific results can be presented during the event.
  • Social impact: The project must be presented in such a way that it highlights its potential social and community impact as well as the attraction to STEAM studies, in general. Projects should be presented so that they can arouse the interest of pre-university teachers to inspire projects with younger students.
  • Innovation and creativity: Initiatives that present innovative approaches to solving social problems and that promote the use of accessible and sustainable technologies will be particularly valued.
  • Potential for implementation at the pre-university level: Preferably, projects should have the potential to be adapted in pre-university contexts, offering options for implementation at different levels.
  • Availability: Selected projects will be presented in person at the XI Unite! Dialogue in Barcelona. Selected students should be available to travel during the dates of the event.

Plastic-free oceans: Ocean sustainability in the sights of ULISSES

ULisboa is holding the 5th edition of the project and applications are open from 15 November to 15 January Under the motto ‘Ocean without Plastics’, the initiative aims to creatively develop innovative technological solutions to characterise and mitigate the pollution of the oceans by plastics, guaranteeing biodiversity and the sustainable reuse of these materials in applications with economic value.

University of Lisbon Interdisciplinary Studies on Sustainable Environment and Seas aims to raise awareness among students and society, favouring a deeper understanding of issues related to the oceans. 

The initiative is aimed at university students who are looking to take part in an interdisciplinary and international project, who want to deepen their knowledge of the ocean and its importance for the sustainability of the planet, and who are looking to explore different career prospects. It will take place over several weeks, with an online component between January and April 2025, and a face-to-face component in Lisbon from 7 to 25 July 2025. 

The selected students will take part in an international team and, supported by researchers and experts, will be challenged to design the most innovative solution to the problems facing the oceans in a collaborative environment. 

The winning team in the last edition designed a scientific project that precisely addressed the three main objectives of the challenge. Firstly, they identified the technological resources and communication strategies essential for mapping the area affected by the incident described in the challenge. Next, they analysed the biodiversity of the impacted region, presenting a list of species at high risk and developing a detailed monitoring plan to assess the impacts over time. Finally, they proposed two innovative solutions to reduce plastic pollution in the oceans. 

Ulisses is a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) funded under Erasmus+ KA131. It consists of an intensive learning programme, offered by three partner institutions, combining virtual learning activities with physical mobility activities. ULisboa will be the receiving institution, where the learning activities during the physical mobility will occur. Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya  and Technische Universität Darmstadt are partner institutions, collaborating in the teaching and sending students in mobility. Notwithstanding, students from other institutions are welcome to apply.

The programme is free and completion confers 6 ECTS credits. European students can also apply for an Erasmus grant to cover travel and accommodation costs.

After a well-deserved summer break, the Unite! Reading Club returns with renewed energy and two fascinating literary selections for this fall. The books chosen for this season are Sola (2021) by Carlota Gurt and Purge (2008) by Sofi Oksanen.

Practice another culture with Unite! virtual language tandems!

Improve your speaking skills in Spanish, Catalan, German, Italian, French, Swedish, Finnish, Portuguese, Polish, or English with another student from the Unite! community, discover their culture, and expand your international network.

Register via the Metacampus space for virtual language tandems to 24th October 2024. You will be paired with a student whose language interests match yours within 15 days after the registration period. The number of tandems depends on the supply and demand of participants.

Unite! Seed Fund for Student Activities 2024

The call for applications opens on 15 October until 15 December 2024. Each project can receive up to €20,000 in funding, with project periods lasting up to 18 months (April 2025 to September 2026).

The call aims to fund projects on any subject or extracurricular topic that brings an added value to students and is collaborative. Possible ideas include joint activities such as exhibitions, events, excursions, competitions, hackathons, courses on Metacampus; in areas such as innovation, sports, career, language, education, communication, outreach, or any other promising idea.

Why should you apply to the Unite! Seed Fund?

Training in Research Data Management and Open Science

The Finnish Aalto University is organizing a free series of thirteen training webinars on research data management and open science. Researchers, students, and administrative staff from Unite! universities are invited to participate.

The webinar topics include, among others:

● Introduction to research data management
● AI and research work
● Exploring machine learning in research
● Artificial intelligence, medical decision-making, and research ethics

The first training is scheduled for October 9, with the final session taking place at the beginning of December. The sessions will be led by experts in research data management. Last academic year, nearly 2,000 registrations were made for the series they conducted.
