Enrollment for the Widening Doctoral Programme is opening soon

As part of the Unite!Widening project, direct scholarship support is planned for doctoral candidates from Wrocław University of Science and Technology (PWr) and the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) who are conducting research in areas that are strategic for the project. Selected doctoral candidates will receive an additional scholarship to support the development of their research in collaboration with industry and an academic supervisor from one of the universities in the Unite! alliance.

The initiative, called the Industry-Embedded PhD School, is one of the key actions of the Unite!Widening project and is being implemented by Unite! universities from Widening countries, namely Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the University of Lisbon. This concept promotes close collaboration with industry, extended academic supervision (a second supervisor from a Unite! university in a non-Widening country), and a research focus on at least one of the following strategic areas defined for the project:

– Health & Biotech

– Urban and Resources Sustainability

– Circular Economy & Materials

– Digital & Autonomous Technologies

 

Participants selected for the programme will receive increased scholarship support for a period of up to three years.

Application Process:

The recruitment process will be based on criteria jointly agreed upon by PWr and ULisboa; however, applications will be submitted separately at each university. Eligible to apply will be first-year doctoral candidates enrolled in the Doctoral School at PWr or ULisboa. At ULisboa, applicants to the Doctoral School may also apply.

Applicants will be required to submit a proposal including a description of the research project, its development potential in collaboration with industry, a summary of previous achievements, and a motivation statement for participating in the project. Submissions will be evaluated by designated committees. The recruitment process may include an interview to assess the submitted information.

Unite! Visiting Professorship Programme 2025

TU Darmstadt invites experienced postdocs, lecturers, and professors from Unite! partner universities to apply for 13 funded visiting professorships starting Winter Semester 2025/26

In 2025, the Unite! Visiting Professorship Programme continues to aim at attracting outstanding international talents to promote interdisciplinarity in teaching and didactic innovation through international experience. It is open to all subjects represented at TU Darmstadt. Up to 13 visiting professorships could be financially supported. The target group are primarily experienced postdocs. The deadline for applications is March 31st, 2025.

This format of strategic cooperation between Unite! universities promotes networking among its academic communities and supports the career development of the visiting scientists. Moreover, students benefit from internationally oriented teaching. The target group are primarily experienced postdocs affiliated to Unite! partner universities, although advanced career phase (lecturers, professors) are also welcome to apply.  

Visiting professors from the Unite! partner universities offer supplementary (elective) courses at TU Darmstadt, ideally bringing innovative topics. Starting in the winter semester 2025/26, the appointment period should cover the lecture period from mid-October to mid-February and can be established for a maximum of two years.

Financing

TU Darmstadt will cover all the costs, with a co-financing structure planned for the WS 2025/26 (half of the costs covered centrally, and the other half from the host institutes). Possible prolongations of the guest professorships should be financed by the host departments themselves. The use of state funds (Landesmittel) is obligatory.

Expression of interest

Interested candidates should explore the faculties and departments of TU Darmstadt here. Once you identify the department that aligns with your area of interest, candidates are encouraged to directly contact the head of the department, briefly introducing yourself and providing a proposal for the course you would like to teach at TU Darmstadt.
You may contact Dr.-Ing. Nebojša Čamprag at nebojsa.camprag@tu-darmstadt.de. He will assist you in identifying a suitable department and facilitating contact with the department head for further discussions.

  • A brief motivation letter (half a page)
  • A short description of a course you intend to teach at TUDa (half a page)
  • An academic curriculum vitae
  • A doctoral certificate (and postdoctoral qualifications, if applicable, for teaching at the professorial level).The application must include the following:

    • A proposal for the candidate in the form of a recommendation letter (max. 1–1.5 pages)
    • A written statement outlining the added value of the candidate’s teaching at TU Darmstadt and for Unite!

Versatile Engineers of the future. Project management and leadership soft skills in a technical setting.

Nowadays, engineers go beyond mere technical expertise; their proficiency extends to project management and leadership.

Recognizing the shift, students from the 4S Trainers Group at Wroclaw Tech have come up with a pioneering initiative that offers a comprehensive training program for students from Unite!. “Versatile Engineers of the Future” – this new project secures funding from Unite! Seed Fund for Student Activity, involves 3 partner universities: Wroclaw Tech, Politecnico di Torino and Universidade de Lisboa.

The project objective is to provide a comprehensive training program for students from Unite! alliance universities: Wroclaw Tech, PoliTO and ULisboa. The program value lies in its capacity to educate students across technical, social, business, and project management dimensions. Coordinator Bartosz Stec aims to focus the project around developing project management and leadership soft skills, intending to apply them in the technical, low-consumption vehicles environment. Technical and soft skills’ knowledge will intersect in a unified program involving the student groups from three partner universities.

Boost Your Skills in a Technical Setting.

How will students achieve these valuable skills? The Versatile Engineers of the Future project is anchored in 5-day training camps held in each participating country. Beginning with the selection of a group of 24 students, online meetings and training sessions are essential for gathering preliminary information about participants and keeping the people involved and updated about the state of the project. The result and knowledge gained during the camps will be validated through appropriate interviews and questionnaires.

The inaugural camp will take place in Lisbon in September 2024, offering participants a tailored experience designed for engineers eager to explore management and entrepreneurship. This training will consist of lectures and workshops. The second camp, scheduled for November in Turin, will focus on the technical part of the training program.
The final camp, set for March 2025 in Wrocław, will serve as a culmination of the training, testing participants’ acquired knowledge and leadership abilities in tackling complex project challenges. Activities during this phase will predominantly focus on soft skills training, fostering open discussions, and culminating in a group case study.

The project involves three university students organizations. Each of them will be responsible for a different topic of the training program. Trainers from 4S, the Student Union Training Section from Wroclaw Tech, will conduct the soft skills training. Members of Team H2politO from PoliTO, with the help of Teaching staff will be responsible for the technical part of workshops, lectures, hands-on activities and visits to laboratories. Members of the AEIST, the official Student Union of Instituto Superior Técnico, from ULisboa, will be responsible for transferring knowledge about exchange of practical insights and real-world strategies, providing a comprehensive view of business within engineering disciplines.

Training in the Field of Open Science and Research Data Management

The network Unite! and Aalto University invite you to the third cycle of training sessions on open science and research data management. Scientists, students, and staff are welcome to participate.

One of the goals of the Unite! network is to enhance competencies in the field of open science at partner universities and more broadly in society.

Aalto University’s Data Agents are a group of research-oriented university staff who support researchers and students in matters related to research data management. In the last academic year, approximately 2000 people registered for their training cycles.

The spring series includes topics such as:

  • Artificial intelligence and research work,
  • OER policy for higher education,
  • Exploring AI analysis of qualitative data,
  • Privacy in speech technology research,
  • Archiving data collected from people.

Workshop Presentation of the Agora Platform Promoting Digital Collaboration in Higher Education

The network Unite! invites Wroclaw University of Science and Technology employees to participate in online workshops dedicated to the Àgora platform. It facilitates access to information using artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The workshops will commence on Friday, January 26th, at 10 a.m.

The workshops are aimed at individuals from university environments (faculty and administrative staff) who collaborate with other entities and institutions. The Àgora platform facilitates access to all information using artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The coordinating team of the European project aUPaEU, led by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-Barcelona Tech (UPC), is organizing virtual workshops titled “Introduction to the Concept and Implementation of Àgora,” aimed at individuals from university communities (faculty and administrative personnel) collaborating with other entities and institutions.

The main goal of Àgora is to strengthen collaboration, particularly in the areas of research and education, by promoting their digital transformation through the involvement of specialized acceleration services.

Interested individuals from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology are invited to informational workshops, which will take place virtually on January 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

“During the workshops, we will have the opportunity to unveil all the details of the Àgora platform and its operation, presenting Àgora developed for the Unite! alliance, to which UPC belongs,” explained Professor Jesús Alcober from UPC, the project’s main coordinator. According to Alcober, these platforms, with the support of artificial intelligence, “can build and implement acceleration service models for similar organizations, ensuring the exchange of collective experience among European higher education institutions, networks, university alliances, and their sponsoring organizations.”

Unite! Launches the U!Reading Book Club with “La plaça del diamant” by Mercè Rodoreda.

The inaugural meeting of the international university Book Club will take place online in the second week of February. Registrations for the Club have already started.

Students from nine alliance universities can now sign up for the Club. The first meeting will be held online in the second week of February. Organizers anticipate that each university’s library will provide Club members with books suggested for discussion, either in the original version or in English.

Mercè Rodoreda and her work “La plaça del diamant” are the first book chosen to kick off the Unite! Book Club initiative, led by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-Barcelona Tech (UPC) and funded by the alliance through the Seed Fund for student projects. The idea for this proposal comes from Martina Massana, a student at UPC, Carme Fenoll, the director of the culture and community area, and two students from Grenoble and Aalto.

Join the U!Reading Club

The organizing team will select works from various cultures and academic disciplines to introduce participants to diverse literary and academic traditions. Their aim is to combine proposals of classic literature from each country with works by young and emerging authors.

Every month, they will suggest a book from one of the countries, and during different sessions, Club members will be able to share their ideas and thoughts after reading the proposed work. Organizers plan to invite authors to sessions whenever possible, promoting direct debate and knowledge about the authors among students.

The aim of the organizing team is to encourage critical thinking, facilitate the exchange of ideas, debates, recommendations, and experiences in an international and non-academic environment.

Further grants for doctoral research within three priority areas of Unite! We invite you to apply.

Until December 31, 2023, applications are open for doctoral scholarships under the cooperation agreement between ULisboa and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

The University of Lisbon (ULisboa), in collaboration with FCT and with the support of the Unite! consortium, will award 9 doctoral scholarships.

Priority will be given to research in areas crucial to the Unite! network, although the organizers do not rule out the possibility of selecting projects not directly related to them.

Priority areas:

  • Energy conversion and storage (photovoltaics, wind, batteries, and hydrogen)
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Industry 4.0

Projects awarded with the grant should promote institutional cooperation, meaning they should involve collaboration between the University of Lisbon and another partner institution within the Unite! consortium.

The grants will be financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) under the FCT-UNITE protocol.

All application procedures, including submission, evaluation, announcement of results, pre-interviews, claims, and appeals, will be conducted exclusively online.

Expand your communication skills and reach out to others with Unite!

The seminar is aimed at students and doctoral candidates who want to gain new tools and resources to improve communication and reach others with their message. The seminar will take place online on November 21st. Participation is free, but registration is required.

The topic of the first seminar for students as part of the Unite! Outreach training is networking and effective communication. The training is aimed at alliance students interested in enhancing their communication skills when working with non-specialized audiences, such as prospective students, public organizations, residents, small and medium-sized enterprises, or public administration.

The session aims to identify and understand the possibilities of working with these audiences and to learn effective dissemination and co-creation techniques. Participants will analyze and evaluate methods proposed by trainers in practical and real-life cases related to the context of social responsibility in engineering and technology. Through these exercises, they will gain tools and knowledge to achieve excellent results in outreach and communication. The session will also include group work and participant presentations.
