(CM8, MS20)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Wroc\u0142aw Tech led the working group within the Unite! alliance aimed at investigating student needs regarding sustainability. The report, based on surveys conducted across nine European technical universities, sheds new light on how young engineers want to learn and live on &#8220;green campuses&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study, involving over 200 students, covered education, research, and campus operations. The results are clear: the academic community expects their universities to be leaders in climate action and is ready to participate actively.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Education: Less Theory, More Projects<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the report&#8217;s key findings is a gap in curricula. Although student environmental awareness is high, approximately 75% of respondents indicated that current educational content regarding sustainability is insufficient or limited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, students do not want another mandatory general lecture. Instead, the top desired changes include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interdisciplinary projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (solving real-world problems).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Life Cycle Assessment (LCA\/LCC) modules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> embedded in existing courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Specialized elective courses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focused on climate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many as 62% of respondents consider it crucial to include Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in learning outcomes across all study programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Dream Campus: Biodiversity and Well-being<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about campus management priorities, students were less likely to point to abstract &#8220;GHG emission reductions&#8221; and more likely to choose tangible, visible changes. The three top actions selected by students are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing <\/span><b>biodiversity and green spaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better <\/span><b>waste management and recycling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of <\/span><b>renewable energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, students view the &#8220;green campus&#8221; holistically \u2013 initiatives supporting <\/span><b>mental health and well-being<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also ranked high on the priority list.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Barriers and Willingness to Act<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also identified major obstacles to implementing the green transition. According to respondents, these are primarily a <\/span><b>lack of funding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (indicated by 71 people), as well as insufficient community engagement and administrative hurdles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these difficulties, the report carries an optimistic message. Over half of the students (54%) declared a willingness to personally engage in green initiatives on campus, e.g., through volunteering or attending workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>What\u2019s Next?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings from the report led by Wroc\u0142aw Tech will now serve to develop concrete action plans within the Unite! &#8220;Open Innovation Community for the Green Transition&#8221; package.
